Welcome to my website — a journey through my life that begins in the early years of space exploration. Visiting relatives in Harlem barrios instilled in me the desire to work towards a better future for everyone.
“Born on the Moon” has two meanings. (1) Before humans in space, I was enthralled by science-fiction and started dreaming of space exploration. I wanted to be an astronaut and I believed I would be living on the Moon. (2) There is a Puerto Rican saying: “I would be Puerto Rican even if I were born on the Moon.” My logo combines both with a Taíno (original Puerto Rican inhabitants) petroglyph of the coquí (frog) native to the island on the Moon.
“Engineer Torres” was my real-world title as a NASA contractor long before a character with the same name appeared on Star Trek: Voyager. I am a Star Trek fan from its first airing in 1966.
In 1976, I became one of the first Latinas to break into the U.S. space industry working on an important pre-Hubble satellite followed by the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station programs.
I invite you to travel back in time with me to see the future we are building together.
Enjoy the ride!
